Winter Smudging Set

Wissenswertes über Winter Smudging Set

The twelve nights between Christmas and 6 January are known in German-speaking countries as the Rauhnächte. In many regions it is a tradition to smudge the home during this time and close the year with a quiet ritual. Here you will find everything you need, as a ready-made set or to put together yourself.

Which incense suits the winter nights?

The most popular choices are white sage and palo santo. Sage smells herbal and clear, palo santo woody and slightly sweet. Neither needs charcoal, which makes them a good place to start. If you prefer something more traditional, burn frankincense and myrrh. The resins go on a resin burner with a screen or on charcoal in a bowl with incense sand.

Our tip for getting started

The smudge kit with palo santo and white sage contains two sage bundles and four palo santo sticks, enough for several nights. For resins, the frankincense set with myrrh and charcoal is the easiest choice because the charcoal is included.

When do people smudge?

There is no fixed rule. Many smudge on single dates such as 21 December, Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve and 6 January. Others smudge briefly on each of the twelve evenings. Early evening, when it gets dark, is a popular time. Air the room well afterwards and never leave embers unattended.
